Virtual Webinar: From Roots to Heart

In this recorded virtual presentation with Denee Bex, MPH, RD, CDCES, we will discuss the connection between Indigenous nutrition and cardiovascular health. This presentation will discuss the current state of cardiovascular disease in American Indian communities and what our communities are doing about it. We will also explore traditional indigenous foods which support heart health and discuss strategies to incorporate these foods into our modern diets. At the heart of this discussion is uplifting local traditional Indigenous food and highlighting the role of local foods producers with the goal of promoting heart health.

 

Objectives:

1. Understand the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, risk factors and current evidence of heart health in Indigenous communities.

2. Explore traditional Indigenous foods and eating practices which promote heart health and explore the impact of modern dietary changes on heart health.

3. Discuss the role of local foods and food producers which support healthy hearts and healthy communities.
